Research section

Education and Pedagogy

Teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, teacher education, higher education policy, educational technology and equity of access, with a preference for classroom evidence.

Scope

This section publishes research on teaching and learning at school, college and university level: curriculum design, assessment and evaluation, teacher education and professional development, educational psychology, inclusive and special education, language of instruction, vocational and skill education, educational technology, and the governance and financing of education.

Work on the implementation of education policy is welcome, particularly studies that compare what a policy requires with what institutions actually do.

What the editors look for

A described intervention, a described context, and a measured outcome. Where the study is qualitative, a transparent account of how participants were selected, how data were gathered and how themes were derived, with enough raw material quoted for the reader to test the interpretation.

Studies of a single institution are publishable, and useful, provided the author does not generalise beyond what one institution can support. Comparative work across institutions or regions should explain how the sites were chosen.

Where research involves students, particularly minors, ethics approval and institutional permission must be named at submission, and consent must be obtained from guardians as well as participants.

What the section will not publish

Opinion about what education ought to be, without evidence. Surveys reporting satisfaction percentages with no analysis. Descriptions of a technology or a method with no measured effect on learning.

Article types

Research articles, review articles, classroom based case studies, short communications on instruments and methods, and book reviews.
