Hindi Language and Literature

Scope

यह खंड हिंदी तथा अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं के साहित्य, आलोचना, भाषाविज्ञान, अनुवाद अध्ययन, लोक परंपरा और भाषा शिक्षण से संबंधित मौलिक शोध प्रकाशित करता है।

This section publishes original research in Hindi and other Indian language literatures: literary criticism and theory, the history of literary movements, poetics, linguistics and dialectology, translation studies, folk and oral traditions, manuscript and print history, media and popular literature, and the pedagogy of language teaching.

Language of publication

Manuscripts may be written entirely in Hindi and are reviewed by Hindi speaking referees. Accepted work is published in Hindi, with an English title, abstract and keywords added so that the article can be found, indexed and cited by readers who do not read Devanagari. The editorial office prepares that English apparatus with the author where the author would rather not.

Work written in English about Hindi and other Indian language material is equally welcome.

What the editors look for

Close reading supported by evidence from the text, rather than assertion about it. Historical claims about a movement, a periodical or an author supported by dated sources. Translation studies that quote both the source and the translation so that the reader can judge the claim. Fieldwork on oral traditions that records where, when and from whom the material was collected, with consent.

Criticism that consists mainly of praise or of biography is not research and is returned at screening.

Referencing

Use MLA 9th edition, or a consistent Hindi academic convention if the manuscript is in Hindi, and name the convention in the covering letter. Cite Devanagari sources in Devanagari with a transliterated form in the reference list, and give the edition and year for every literary text quoted.

Article types

Research articles, review articles, critical essays supported by textual evidence, translation studies, and book reviews of scholarly works published within the last three years.
