Research section

Science, Technology and Environment

Applied science, environmental studies, agriculture and water, technology and society, and the ethics and governance of new technologies, written to be intelligible across disciplines.

Scope

This section publishes applied and interdisciplinary research in environmental science and management, water resources and sanitation, agriculture and food systems, energy and climate, biodiversity and conservation, public understanding of science, technology and society, data and computing applications in other disciplines, and the ethics and governance of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence.

What the editors look for

Reproducibility. The method must be described in enough detail that another researcher with the same equipment could repeat the study. Sampling sites, instruments, calibration, periods of measurement and analytical procedures must be stated. Where a model is used, its assumptions, parameters and validation must be reported, and code or data should be deposited where possible with the repository named in the manuscript.

Because the readership is multidisciplinary, technical work must be written so that a competent reader from another field can follow the question, the method and the conclusion, even if the detail of the analysis is beyond them. Manuscripts that are unintelligible outside a narrow specialism are returned for rewriting rather than rejected.

Interdisciplinary work

Manuscripts that sit between this section and another, for example the law of environmental regulation or the health effects of water quality, are welcome. Name both sections in the covering letter, and reviewers will be drawn from each.

Article types

Research articles, review articles, short communications reporting a method, an instrument or a data set, technical notes, and book reviews.
