Scope
This section publishes research in nursing science and practice, nursing education and curriculum, public and community health, maternal and child health, geriatric and palliative care, mental health nursing, infection control, hospital and health services administration, health policy, and the organisation of care in district and rural settings.
The section is particularly interested in work conducted where most care is actually delivered: district hospitals, community health centres, nursing colleges, primary health centres and homes. Studies from such settings are frequently better evidence of how a health system works than studies from tertiary institutions, and are published far less often.
What the editors look for
A clear research question, a sampling strategy the reader can evaluate, an instrument that is described and, where adapted, validated, ethics approval named with its reference number, and a discussion that distinguishes what the data show from what the author hopes they show. Sample size should be justified rather than merely reported, and limitations should be stated by the author rather than discovered by the reviewer.
Reporting guidelines appropriate to the design are expected: STROBE for observational studies, CONSORT for trials, PRISMA for systematic reviews, COREQ for qualitative work. Name the guideline followed in the method section.
Ethics
No manuscript involving human participants, patients, patient records, minors or identifiable communities will be sent for review without a named ethics approval and reference number. Consent to publish is required for any material through which an individual could be identified. Nothing in this section is clinical guidance, as stated in the disclaimer.
Article types
Research articles, review articles including systematic and scoping reviews, short communications reporting a single finding or validated instrument, case studies of service delivery, and book reviews.
